On Tuesday, ASA President and CEO Glenn Hughes testified before the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative in response to its Section 301 investigation into structural excess capacity and production in manufacturing sectors. Hughes urged USTR to exclude fishing tackle products and key inputs from any additional tariff actions under the investigation.
Domestic manufacturing capacity is lacking for most fishing tackle, with production concentrated overseas due to the scale and price points required to serve American anglers. Additional tariffs would raise costs, reduce participation, and harm U.S. businesses already paying the federal excise tax that supports the Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Program.
