Historical Fishing Tackle Sales Trends
Over the past 15 years, fishing tackle sales for all types of fishing, freshwater and saltwater, have declined 4.8 percent, adjusting for inflation. The trend in the last 5 years (2001 to 2006) has improved slightly, with a 4.9 percent increase.
While Great Lakes tackle sales have decreased 44.8 percent over the past 15 years and other freshwater fishing tackle sales have declined 3.8 percent overall (not including Great Lakes), saltwater fishing tackle has exhibited especially strong growth. From 1991 to 2001, saltwater fishing saw a 30.8 percent increase in tackle sales. Except for the Great Lakes, the average dollars spent per angler for all types of fishing has increased.
Like other leisure-time activities, fishing participation and spending are greatly affected by external forces. Record high spending on fishing was reported during 1996. In contrast, spending in 1991 and 2001 was down, possibly affected by the Persian Gulf War and economic recessions. The year 2006 represented a strong year for the economy and sportfishing.
More information on historical sportfishing trends can be found by visiting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Web site.
