National Fishing and Boating Week
2006 Highlights
ASA thanks all its members and partners for their support
ASA’s National Fishing and Boating Week events held June 5-7, 2006,
provided an opportunity for ASA members to meet with Members
of Congress and federal agency representatives to discuss policy issues.
The week began with the annual children’s
fishing event at Constitution Gardens located on the Mall in downtown,
Washington, D.C. Approximately 300 children from the greater Washington
Metro area were taught the basics of fishing and boating by hundreds of volunteers
including ASA members and its foundations staff. The day ended with a member
reception and boat cruise on the Potomac River, sponsored by the Recreational
Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF).
Mamie Parker,
assistant director for Fisheries and Habitat Conservation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, was the Tuesday lunch speaker.
A Congressional
reception was held Tuesday night in the Dirksen Senate Office Building
on Capitol Hill. During the Hill reception, ASA awarded its highest honors
to two life-long sportfishing advocates. Representative
John D. Dingell (D-MI) was awarded the Norville Prosser Lifetime
Achievement Award and Jim Cummins, director, Living Resources Section, Interstate
Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB), received the Future
of Fishing Award.
The week’s events wrapped up with a Capitol Hill breakfast briefing
co-sponsored by ASA and the Congressional
Sportsmen’s Foundation. Steve Murawski, Ph.D., director of the Office
of Science and Technology for the National
Marine Fisheries Service, was the featured speaker.
