ASA’s Gordon Robertson Honored for Aquatic Conservation
by Mary Jane Williamson

March 21, 2005—ALEXANDRIA, VA. On March 10, 2005, Gordon Robertson, vice president of the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), received the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services’ (USFWS) Assistant Director’s Conservation Award for his outstanding contributions to the conservation of aquatic habitats at the USFWS Second Annual “Hook and Cook” Festival.

The award was presented by Steve Williams, then director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Capitol Hill event, which serves to recognize champions from the public and private sectors who dedicate their time and resources for the purpose of combating threats to the Nation’s aquatic habitats.

Former USFWS Director Steve Williams presents ASA Vice President Gordon Robertson with an award for his outstanding contributions to the conservation of aquatic habitats.

“Conservation of our Nation’s aquatic habitats is a big part of ASA’s mission,” said ASA’s Vice President Gordon Robertson, “and our main goal is to ensure that we do the best job we can to safeguard and promote the social, economic, and conservation values of sportfishing.”

Robertson, one of nine award recipients, has spent the past 25 years working on resource policy issues with Congress, other conservation organizations and resource management agencies. Prior to taking over as Vice President and head of government affairs at ASA, Robertson spent 13 years with West Virginia’s Wildlife Resources program as deputy chief.  Additionally, he worked for nearly 10 years on legislative and fish and wildlife issues with the Wildlife Management Institute and later with the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

ASA was one of twelve sponsors of this year’s “Hook and Cook” Festival.

The American Sportfishing Association is the sportfishing industry’s trade association, uniting more than 600 members of the sportfishing and boating industries with state fish and wildlife agencies, federal land and water management agencies, conservation organizations, angler advocacy groups and outdoor journalists. The American Sportfishing Association safeguards and promotes the enduring social, economic and conservation values of sportfishing.
